I have a hard core Low spec PC, it’s almost 5 years old and still works wonders… Though I can’t run some programs together. I plan on buying a new one but I want to share how I survived 5 years with this PC.
My specs by the way are:
Pentium 4 1.8gHz, 256 mbRAM, 64mb GeForce 4 TiMx 440 and that’s about it.
To survive with this kind of mess I used alternative programs that eats little ram
Browser - We all know how Firefox eats ram like an obese 11 year old compulsive eater, I found the ever smexy and discreet opera. It’s really cool with built-in bitorrent which I never use, that built-in irc client which I used once, and that speed dialing which is really stupid. I disabled all of those so screw em. Well my point is if FF eats so much ram but I have opera as my main browser.
Bitorrent Client - utorrent!!!!! ‘Nuff Said
Music - Windows media player, winamp, iTunes are all RAM whores.. I use foobar for my music and VLC media player for videos, DVD’s and stuff. Also if you use and iPod install iTunes but don’t make it the default to play music and movies, jsut use it to move music from iPod-Pc and Vice versa
Instant Messenging - God knows how much I hate running three IM clients (YIM, MSN and AIM) solution? No screw trillian, it’s a RAM whore too… use the new GAIM, which is Pidgin IM.

So if you have that spare PC in the garage, garbage, moms home, motel or etc.. Don’t throw it away, save mother earth, use it for another 2 years… Good luck with that btw, I’m buying a new one sooon. ( the additional “o” was intended)
